Chapter Ten

Aranha was kicking herself for not eating last night. After she’d left his condo she hadn’t thought it necessary. She could sustain minimal energy on human food and she often went a week or two without draining a kill. If she was going to have to be shifting and fighting, she needed more. She hadn’t drained one of her kills in a week and she knew that she wouldn’t be at her best if it came to battle.

They’d decided it best to wait out the sun in the barn, she hadn’t minded it too much and had even resisted the urge to spin webs and listen in to their thoughts. Lars was a surprisingly pleasant man to be around, calm and level-headed. The jealous way Dag reacted to him was priceless, she had no interest in Lars, but she didn’t let Dag know he’d ruined her for the moment on other men. Now she was in the backseat of Lars’ truck with Jonah and they were on their way back to the city. The sun was going down, and tensions were high. None of them knew what they might run into. A vampire or werewolf wouldn’t be that big a deal, but a whole pack! That might be difficult. If the daywalkers spotted Dag and Lars with Aranha, and if they didn’t try and fight to take her for themselves, would they alert Sten to her presence with them? That could be even worse; she wasn’t sure she was interested in ever meeting him.

“Where are we going?” Lars asked as they approached the city.

Dag turned and looked at her, raising one eyebrow.

“Perhaps we set up base at your condo. I can go from there on my own.” She didn’t need them to know all of her secrets, she was also sure that hiding alone would be much easier than hiding with these two hulking men and a skittish werewolf.

“Ha,” Dag laughed. “I am not letting you out of my sight. We will go to your kill, then we can wait out the night at my condo and head to the vampire compound before dawn, try to get a head count.”

“I don’t need bodyguards.”

“You didn’t need them when no one knew you existed. Now you’re on far too many dangerous radars.”

“He’s right,” Jonah whispered.

Aranha rolled her eyes but agreed. If he wanted to witness the horror of what she was, fine. Then maybe he’d stop treating her like she couldn’t take care of herself. She directed them through the city to a neighborhood where she knew she had a meal ready for her.

“Park in the next alley.”

“This isn’t where you left Frank,” Dag pointed out.

“No, Frank isn’t ready yet,” she murmured.

“Who’s Frank?” Lars asked as he parked in a narrow alley between two abandoned brick buildings.

“A serial killer who liked to hang out at Dag’s bar.”

“You let a serial killer just hang out at your place? Was he picking off your customers?”

“I think serial killer is a strong word,” Dag said with a huff.
